When Eleanor was 14 she moved to live with her Grandmother
in England where she attended Allenswood Girl’s Academy in
London. There Marie Souvestre, who Eleanor Roosevelt later identified
as the first greatest influence on her educational and emotional
development, taught her French, German, Italian, English literature,
composition, music, drawing, painting and dance. Although the school
did not offer classes in history, geography, and philosophy, Marie
Souvestre privately taught Eleanor Roosevelt’s these subjects. Her
teacher also openly stated her political views, defending the rights of
the working-class. This intrigued Eleanor and is one of the main reasons
she became a political activist. Once Eleanor married FDR and became
the first lady, she had the power to make a difference.
